Possible side effects of CBD

Cannabidiol, better known as CBD, can help with various ailments. CBD oil is used, among other things, for relaxation, it facilitates sleep and suppresses appetite.

CBD products are usually used as supplements or as support in various medical problems. This fact encourages us to ask the question: does the CBD have side effects? And if so, which ones? Because the scope of CBD is wide, it is important to investigate this issue and report any undesirable effects.

To help clients learn more about the possible side effects of cannabidiol, we summarized the possible side effects of CBD. It is worth mentioning, however, that CBD has very few side effects and is generally considered a safe substance.

Side effects of CBD include:

  • Effect on enzymes in pregnancy
  • Increased intraocular pressure
  • Inhibition of drug metabolism in the liver
  • Dry mouth
  • Increased tremors in some patients with Parkinson’s disease
  • Low blood pressure
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Problems falling asleep
  • Limited appetite

Possible side effects of CBD

CBD has an adverse effect on enzymes, i.e. prohibition of using CBD during pregnancy

The only true side effect of cannabidiol is that CBD may negatively affect the enzymes necessary for the placental function in pregnant women. In cell experiments, CBD has been found to affect both P-glycoprotein and Breast-Cancer-Resistance-Protein. Because these proteins play an important role in the proper functioning of the placenta, CBD is not recommended during pregnancy – even at low doses.

Possible side effects of CBD 1

Increased intraocular pressure

A study published in the Journal of Glaucoma showed that intake of CBD (as opposed to THC) may increase intraocular pressure, therefore patients suffering from glaucoma should be consulted with a doctor first.

Inhibiting drug metabolism in the liver

CBD can interact with many drugs because it reduces the activity of some liver enzymes, such as cytochrome P 450. Taking a very high dose of CBD, cannabinoid can temporarily affect the activity of P450 enzymes, changing the way drugs are metabolized in the body.

However, in this case, the impact of CBD can be compared to the effect of grapefruit on the liver.

Dry mouth

Another reported side effect of CBD is dryness in the mouth. This effect appears to be due to the involvement of the endocannabinoid system in inhibiting the secretion of saliva. Activation of some receptors changes the production of saliva, which can lead to dry mouth. However, this effect can be quickly eliminated by drinking water.

Increased tremors in some patients with Parkinson’s disease

Some patients with Parkinson’s disease report increased tremors after taking CBD, while others do not experience any deterioration. It is recommended that you consult your doctor before taking CBD.

Low blood pressure

Possible side effects of CBD 2

Higher doses of CBD may cause a small drop in blood pressure, usually within a few minutes after taking CBD. This pressure drop is often associated with a feeling of drowsiness. If you are taking blood pressure medications, you should consult your doctor before taking CBD. However, this side effect can easily be removed by drinking a cup of coffee or tea.

Dizziness may be associated with a decrease in blood pressure as described above.

This side effect is transient and, like low blood pressure, can be easily eliminated by drinking a cup of coffee or tea.

A higher dose of CBD causes drowsiness. However, this side effect is rare. If, however, you feel extremely tired after intake, you should not operate any machines or drive vehicles.

Problems falling asleep

Occasionally, the opposite effect occurs, namely insomnia or problems falling asleep. This side effect can be easily prevented by not taking the CBD product in the evening. A very good alternative is also drinking one cup of hemp tea an hour before going to bed.

Limited appetite

This effect may not always be treated as a side effect of CBD. When using CBD to treat obesity, this is the most desirable result.

To summarize, the above-described side effects for the vast majority of users are of little relevance and they rarely affect them. It should also be mentioned that some of them still have to prove by long-term research. However, before taking CBD, consultation with a family doctor is recommended.

Our clients report, almost always, the improvement of their health and well-being!

However, for safety reasons, pregnant women should not take CBD products.
